What does your tyre label tell you?

The EU requires a standard label on new tyres, and it has some useful information on it, if you know what you’re looking at. Introduced in 2012, the standard label for every car tyre, SUV tyre, van tyre, and 4x4 tyre has a range of symbols on it.

In May 2021 further EU regulations were introduced as part of the goal to reach climate neutrality by 2050. It made it simpler to understand efficiency and wet grip performance, grading them from A to E. It also added additional information.

Tyre markings

Fuel efficiency

The rolling resistance of a tyre impacts on fuel economy. A tyre with an A rating can use up to 7.5% less fuel than one with an E rating.

Wet grip

This is a measure of braking performance in a standardised test in line with regulation EC 1222/2009, stopping the vehicle from 50mph in the wet. A-rated tyres have a stopping distance of up to 30% less than E-rated tyres in this test.

Exterior noise

A decibel rating and grade of the exterior noise created by a tyre. C meets current legislation, B complies with planned laws, and A is 3dB lower than B. This rating does not provide information about noise inside the vehicle.

Three Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF)

Displayed on tyres that demonstrate excellent performance in winter conditions. These provide braking distances up to 30% shorter than summer tyres on snowy roads.

Ice grip

Displayed on tyres that are effective on ice, and ideal for driving in icy conditions. These tyres may be unsuitable for dryer, warmer climates.
