What is an axle pair?

An alloy wheel

An axle pair is two wheels on opposite sides of the vehicle that work together. The front wheels of your vehicle, for example, form an axle pair. Because these they share an axle, these two wheels work together, sharing the load of the vehicle and the stresses of use. To do so effectively, they need to be balanced.

Why change axle pairs at the same time?

Because you want your axle pairs to work together perfectly, but we’re driving in an imperfect world! Tyres will wear slightly differently, and this changes how they perform. For example, if the pressure in one tyre has dropped a little, it will very slightly change the diameter of the wheel. That wheel will then have to make more revolutions to cover the same distance, leading to uneven wear between the tyres. It will also put the axle under stress, leading to wear on things like the suspension bushings, bolts, and related components.

Matching tread for better performance

The tread on your tyre is designed to channel water away from the tyres, keeping you in contact with the surface of the road at all times. If you have tread patterns that don’t match, they could work against each other, making them significantly less efficient. This can also lead to uneven force on the axle due to the tyres behaving slightly differently. Replacing axle pairs together ensures that your tyres work together properly, and can save you money in the long run thanks to the reduced wear on tyres and axle components.

Is it the same for 4x4 vehicles?

The defining characteristic of a 4x4 is that it relies on all four wheels working together, not just axle pairs! As such, if any of them are out of balance it can affect all the other tyres, as well as the vehicle’s handling. If you drive a 4x4, it’s always advisable to change the tyres together, rather than one at a time.

“I came to have two tyres fitted a few weeks ago - Ford S-Max. The tyres were nearly new and therefore second-hand but were a great deal. Very grateful to the excellent team who fitted them and for their service. I will definitely be coming again. Quick, efficient and great value for money.”
